Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning has become a leading focus in today’s education reforms. Increasing the number of students who excel in STEM subjects is particularly important for students in underserved or rural areas. Therefore, RTI focuses on ensuring opportunities for developing the next generation of transportation professionals, including engineers, researchers, educators and economists, by providing STEM programs to students in the Appalachian Region.
RTI concentrates its STEM activities on students and instructors.
Programs are designed to spark an interest in STEM subjects, encourage students to pursue transportation-related higher education degrees or career/technical programs and incorporate safety and sustainability concepts into activities.
RTI also hosts workshops to train pre-service teachers, educators and volunteers in STEM-related learning opportunities, which they incorporate into lesson plans or extracurricular activities.
RTI organizes and participates in a variety of programs and events that encourage and enhance STEM activities related to transportation.

LEGO® Robotics Pre-K through 12th grade students design and program LEGO Robotic vehicles and infrastructure to solve real-world engineering challenges. Students also have the opportunity to participate in hands-on day activities, scheduled classroom visits, summer camps or FIRST LEGO league nationwide competitions.

Exploring Engineering: Academy of Excellence (EEAE) This week-long summer camp, sponsored by RTI at MU’s College of Information Technology and Engineering, connects aspiring engineers with working engineers through hands-on activities, site visits to engineering facilities and team-building exercises to encourage them to pursue higher education degrees in engineering.

Paul Ambrose Trail for Health (PATH) Activities have been implemented in local schools to encourage students to safely use sustainable, alternative transportation routes, such as the PATH. An annual essay contest takes place each fall in conjunction with Fit Fest, and spring poster contests take place to commemorate National Transportation Week.

Transportation Injury Prevention and Safety (TIPS) is a joint effort between RTI and St. Mary’s Medical Center to provide transportation safety education and injury prevention education to school-aged children. Through classroom visits and public events, representatives from TIPS instruct students how to safely ride and maintain bicycles, provide free helmets and properly fit car seats.

West Point Bridge Design is a program offered by the US Military Academy and sponsored locally by RTI. This is a nationwide, Internet-based competition, in which students must factor terrain, safety, cost and sustainability in creating a virtual bridge.

West Virginia Operation Lifesaver (WVOL) this program stresses the importance of rail-grade crossing safety to students, educators and adults in our region through presentations and demonstrations tailored to specific ages or groups.
