Building strong communities is a key value for RTI and is a part of the center’s efforts of job creation through transportation. RTI and its employees strive to lead and provide in-kind support for community outreach efforts. This contributes to the quality of life in the Appalachian Region. Volunteers from RTI have participated in and led several events that tie the health, safety, education and cultural activities to transportation and economic development efforts.
As part of our Technology Transfer initiatives, an extensive S.T.E.M. outreach program was designed to introduce pre-K-12 students to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, safety and communication concepts through hands-on outreach activities. S.T.E.M. outreach efforts are concentrated in Southern West Virginia, where events have taken place in more than 40 counties, and some programs have reached national and international audiences. Additional outreach activities have taken place in Southern Ohio and Washington, D.C.
