A collaborative approach to success makes RTI a valued partner by an increasing number of transportation leaders and industry professionals. RTI leadership works closely with a consortium of government, industry and academic representatives to leverage resources, expertise and strategies to make transportation infrastructure systems safer and more efficient.
Robert H. “Bob” Plymale is Director and CEO of RTI. A Director’s Advisory Council, Executive Committee, Education Committee, Technology Transfer Committee and Research Advisory Committee are composed of internal and external representatives. These groups meet on a quarterly or semiannual basis to ensure RTI’s activities are consistent with its goals and objectives as well as to explore future transportation and economic development activities.
The Director’s Advisory Council is composed of approximately eight internal and external members and meets on a semiannual basis. This council advises on the overall direction of RTI; recommends improvements in research components; and provides counsel on research needs and the selection of research proposals.
The Executive Committee is composed of eight internal members who meet on a quarterly basis. This committee reviews current and future activities and ensures they are aligned with the overall goals of the strategic plan; ensures policies and procedures are met within the organization; reviews upcoming or new opportunities for partnerships and projects; and discusses issues that impact the success of the organization.
The Education Committee is composed of seven internal and external members and meets on a semiannual basis. The purpose of this committee is to: improve communications between the academic community, government agencies, private industry and the public sector for degrees/programs in the field of transportation; develop improved transportation programs at all academic levels for professional development; and assess the future needs of transportation professionals.
The Technology Transfer Committee is composed of approximately five internal members and meets on a quarterly basis. The purpose of this committee is to: ensure the organization is fulfilling all RITA requirements for technology transfer activities; identify areas for improvement as it relates to meeting RITA requirements; and track and promote technology transfer activities.
The Research Advisory Committee is composed of approximately 12 internal and external members and meets on a semiannual basis. The purpose of the committee is to: advise the organization on the research needs of the industry and guidelines to meet industry standards; peer review RTI projects; and improve the quality and impact of research, technology transfer and educational activities within the organization.
In addition to the Research Advisory Committee, 11 program area subcommittees are composed of the program area directors/managers, key program area staff and two to four external members. The purpose of each subcommittee is to: improve the quality and impact of research, technology transfer and educational activities within each program area; provide information that will update, expand and improve the quality of the program area; identify industry standards that are relevant to the program area; support and strengthen RTI’s partnerships within the industry; identify funding opportunities and provide strategic planning input.
